The expectations, rights, and responsibilities of graduate students and their advisors have been articulated in a resource called Best Practices in Graduate Student Advising. The GSC Advising Initiative worked jointly with Office of the Dean for Graduate Education (ODGE) to compile existing MIT policy with new policy that reflected the concerns of students, faculty, and administrators from across campus on what constitutes exemplary advising. Hard copies of this resource are available as a poster and pamphlet in the Office for the Dean of Graduate Education and in many Departmental headquarters. It is also available on the ODGE website http://odge.mit.edu/gpp/roles/roles/ as two separate documents: Common Values on the Graduate Student Experience and Institute Policy Guiding the Graduate Student Experience. This resource was launched during a panel discussion on May 7th where faculty from all Schools were invited to share their own best practices. The GSC will be continue this initiative in the coming year to host more Institute-wide discussion and to incorporate Best Practices into orientation events and the general routine of graduate student life.
