Departmental Student GroupsWhile many student groups exist that are centered around hobbies, interests, or cultures, there are an increasing number of departmental student groups that exist to support the students in the departments they represent. These groups not only bring together their constituents in social settings, they can act as vehicles to advocate on behalf of their student constituencies on the departmental level. The GSC also hopes to draw our representative base in part or directly from these departmental groups, as they are in the best position to understand the needs of their students on the departmental level. If you are interested in creating a student group for your department, you should contact the GSC Officers at gsc-officers[at]mit[dot]edu. A listing of current departmental student groups as well as those being formed is given below. For ASA recognition, new Departmental Student Groups are expected to demonstrate that they are truly representative of their respective constituency, and the GSC can help you as you work to develop a mission and structure to meet your students' needs. If you are a member of a departmental graduate student group that does not currently have a webpage, we encourage you to create one. In order to assist with this, we have created a basic template for a departmental student group webpage that you can use.
