Graduate Student Volunteering Day (GSVD) Sign Up
Thanks so much for lending a helping hand. Graduate Student Volunteer Day (GSVD) on Saturday September 12, 2009 is an excellent opportunity to meet fellow graduate students while providing service to the community. The day consists of a registration and breakfast, a few hours of volunteering with a team of MIT graduate students, and an appreciation barbecue to end the day. Each volunteer will also receive a free water bottle as our token of appreciation. Group leaders will receive a $10 gift certificate to the local favorite ice cream store, Toscinini’s!
The GSVD is open to new and current graduate students and their spouses/partners. Although advanced sign-up isn’t required, it’s highly recommended! Tell your friends!

MIT Gene Lego Project
MIT Gene Lego Project :: We are going to build lots and lots of LEGO molecules from LEGOs. The objective is to produce the subunits of DNA and put them into classsroom sets. The photo shows how the nucleotides can be assembled into a double helix. The MIT Museum will use these DNA sets to teach local HS students molecular biology when they come on campus for field trips. Some LEGO DNA sets will also be given to some other Science Centers. This is a family-friendly event. Spouses with families are welcome. Especially come if you love LEGOs or biology. (Please exercise caution in bringing your kids as LEGOs are small pieces that are considered dangerous for toddlers.)
Hearth Home - Ruggles Affordable Assisted Living Community
Hearth Home - Ruggles Affordable Assisted Living Community :: This is a chance to explore South Boston and helping out with gardening and weeding. This community serves low-income and frail elderly, and this is a way for you to extend a helping hand. Please come in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty in and closed-toe shoes. Snacks and water will be provided.
Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts
Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts :: At Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts, you will be providing individual tutoring of computer skills. Furthermore, it’s at the heart of Boston, so it will be a good opportunity to get yourself familiarized with the Faneuil Hall area if you haven’t done so already.
American Students Promoting IRaqi Education (ASPIRE)
ASPIRE :: The MIT organization ASPIRE (American Students Promoting Iraqi Education) needs your help to inventory academic books for shipment to universities in Iraq and other developing countries. Volunteering with ASPIRE is both a fun day out with your MIT colleagues and also a meaningful way to assist in the rebuilding of Iraq. Rides to Lawrence will be provided. You might even score a couple of books to bring home.
Boston Rescue Mission
Boston Rescue Mission :: Work in a soup kitchen to serve the homeless. It’s a fun, rewarding, and enriching experience. It will be a great opportunity to interact with your fellow volunteers, organization staff, and the residents at the shelter.
Rosie’s Place
Rosie’s Place :: Rosie’s place is a sanctuary for poor and homeless women. At Rosie's Place, volunteers are not "extra helpers" but instead are vital to our ability to serve the women who rely on us for both basic survival and assistance in reaching their dreams. You will be helping with the lunch service where you will be able to interact with the residents and learn about their lives.
Would you like to become a group leader?
Yes
No
Would you like to become a group leader? :: As a group leader, you will be the primary contact person between the organization and the rest of the volunteers. I will provide with you all the information you will need beforehand, so you are fully prepared. It’s a rewarding experience and you will also get to know the organization a lot better. On top of that, you will receive a gift certificate to Toscanini's for ice cream!
