Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When does orientation officially start?
Orientation 2009 officially starts on Sunday, August 30. The entire week is action packed. We encourage you to participate in as many events as possible. Orientation is a great opportunity to meet friends who will stick with you for your entire graduate school career and beyond.
Where do I buy tickets for orientation events?
On September 1 and 2, you can buy your tickets at the information booth. After those two days, you can buy tickets at the GSC office, 50-220. Cash only, please!
I bought tickets for orientation events, but I can no longer go. What do I do?
Your best shot is to find someone to buy the ticket from you. Otherwise, you can stop by the information booth and we can give you a refund.
Where can I find the grocery stores, Target, Ikea or the mall?
There are several different grocery stores, Shaws, Trader Joes and Wholefoodsmarket, near MIT. There is a Target in Somerville. There is also another Target along with Costco in Everett. Ikea is around 40 minutes away by car. The closest mall is Cambridgeside Galleria.
Should I bring my car?
That depends on you. For day-to-day transit, T seems to be sufficient for most students. If you are thinking about bringing your car, refer to the Parking and Transportation office in getting a parking space. Cambridge resident parking permits can be applied from the City of Cambridge
I don't have an advisor yet. Freeeeeeeeaking out! help!
Do NOT worry. It's not uncommon that students come without an advisor. Talk to your departmental administrators and other fellow students.
