Registration
Q: Why did you choose Jay Peak for this year?
A: We believe Jay Peak will provide a far superior product to previous Ski Trip destinations. In addition to fantastic skiing and snowboarding options, Jay Peak provides an array of other activities and service to students looking to diversify their activities off the mountain.

Q: Why does this trip cost so much?
A: The reason for the price increase this year is two-fold. First, due to inflation we have had to increase the baseline cost of the trip by approximately 5%. Secondly, and most important, this year we decided to improve the product for the graduate students AND increase the number of students benefited by the trip. In addition to receiving higher quality accommodations, Jay Peak offers a much larger array of activities and services including a water park, ice-skating, and several more dining options when compared to previous years. In addition, this year we will be able to expand the number of available Ski Trip slots by nearly 100 tickets. Overall, when compared to the costs of an identical trip to Jay Peak otuside of MIT Ski Trip, the savings are approximately 50% of the retail value.

Q: Are you making additional profits this year?
A: No.

Q: Why is the trip earlier this year?
A: The trip is earlier this year for two reasons: first, this is the best date/deal we were able to negotiate with Jay Peak. Secondly, we've received concerns/complaints surrounding the previous period as being incompatible with numerous departmental qualifying exams that occur in late January or early February.

Registration
Q: When will registration for the trip open?
A: Please see the “tickets” section.

Cost and Payment
Q: How much does the trip cost?
A: Please see the “tickets” section for pricing details.

Q: What if I don’t want to ski all three days, is the trip cheaper?
A: No, this is an all or nothing deal. You pay the same price and will receive access to the mountain for all 3 days.

Q: What about night skiing?
A: Unfortunately, there is no night skiing at Jay Peak. The good news is that JP has a brand new indoor water park, which you can access as part of this package.

Q: What payment methods are available for the trip?
A: We accept any credit card with a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express logo on it.  The billing address has to be in the United States.

Q: Can I pay for my friend’s trip with my credit card?
A: Yes, you can pay for your guest. If you're driving, both of you must drop off a SIGNED liability waiver form for at the MIT GSC Office (50-220) by January 7, 2013. Failure to do so will mean being denied check-in at the resort. No exceptions.

Q: I’m having trouble paying for the trip online.
A: Please contact gsc-skitrip[at]mit.edu.

Q: What is your privacy policy for credit card transactions?
A: This is our privacy policy and our credit card policy.

Q: I selected the wrong package type. What should I do?
A: Please contact gsc-skitrip[at]mit.edu.

Guest Policy
Q: How do guests register for the trip?
A: After the MIT graduate student/postdoc registers for the trip, the guest can log in to the registration page and register and pay using their host's email address. Please refer to the "notes" section on the registration page when signing up.

Q: Who is considered a guest?
A: Anyone that is not a MIT graduate student/postdoc. This would include boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives, spouses, family and children.

Q: Do guests pay a different price?
A: No, they pay the same as MIT students.

Q: Can I drive, while my guest takes the bus or vice versa?
A: Yes.

Rentals
Q: How much are gear rentals?
A: A discounted group rate is available through Jay Peak for the entire three-day trip.

Q: What rental packages are available?
A: Information on this coming soon.

Q: Where can you store your skis/board at Jay Peak?
A: If you’re in the hotel, there are lockers to store gear on the second floor (this is the floor where you can ski in and out from). If you’re in condos or cottages, gear storage racks are available right outside.

Q: When is the group rental fitting?
A: Exact day and time is TBD. It should be sometime mid-December. Please check back.

Q: What if I can’t make the on-campus rental fitting?  Can I still rent from Jay Peak?
A: Yes.  You can sign up for rentals the evening that we arrive.

Lessons
Q: How many free lessons do I get with the package?
A: As part of our deal with Jay Peak, we have 60 free beginner lessons. This will be allotted by a lottery. If you want to be considered, after registration please send an email to fjawed@mit.edu with "JP lesson lottery" in the subject line.

Q: How do I get my free lessons?
A: We will be updating details on this towards the end of December. Please check back then.

Group Assignments
We are working this. We'll update this section and send out an email regarding group assignment after you register. Be sure to read it carefully before signing up for a group.

Lodging (Cottages, Lodge and Mountain Suites and Hotel Rooms)
Q: How is lodging assigned?
A: Whether you are assigned a hotel or condo is random.  We realize some of you may prefer one or the other, but it is impossible to accommodate all requests.  Thus, keep in mind when you purchase your ticket that you may be in either type of lodging.  Most skiers/riders will be assigned cottages or suites and some skiers/riders will be assigned hotel rooms.

Q: How many people per condo? Are there private rooms?
A: There is 4, 6, and 8 person accommodation available. Check back for privacy details.

Q: Do I need to bring towels or bed sheets? How about kitchen appliances?
A: No, the rooms are fully equipped including full kitchens or kitchenettes. You will probably want to bring some groceries.

Q: I am driving on my own. What about parking?
A: There is plenty parking available at the resort. The hotel offers valet parking.

Q: Is there a grocery store nearby?
A: There is a general store at Jay Peak, which stocks fresh meat, fresh produce, frozen foods, beer and wine.

Q: How far from the slopes is the lodging?
A: At Jay Peak, nearly all lodging is ski in/ski out, located near (or in some cases practically on) the championship golf course, and within walking distance of the Pump House Indoor Waterpark and Ice Haus Indoor Arena. Whether one of the full service Hotel suites, single family homes, full range of condominiums or townhouses, most lodging is within walking distance to a lift-and those few that are not, are located conveniently along our free Resort Shuttle Loop.

Q: How many people are there to a hotel room?
A: Two or three.

Q: Can I request my hotel roommate(s)?
A: Yes. If you make groups, we will try our best to place people in the same group together in rooms. Your chances of being together are highly increased if you make groups in multiples of 4 and/or 6.

Transportation
Q: When will we depart MIT? When will we return?
A: See schedule.

Q: If I don’t take the bus, but instead drive myself to Sunday River, can I pay less for the trip?
A: Yes. Please check ticket information.

Exchanges/Cancellations
Q: Can I get a refund if I decide not to go after paying for the trip?
A: We will not issue any refunds for the trip. After the trip has soldout, there will be a mailing list where you can advertise your spot to sell. See the exchange policy for more details.

Q: I sold my spot to another person, but my package cost more than the package that he wanted. Can I get a refund for the difference?
A: No. We will not issue any refunds. We encourage you to take this into consideration when buying/selling spots on the trip. See the exchange policy for more details.

Q: I didn’t register, the trip is sold out, but I still really want to go. I’ve read the exchange policy. How do I add myself to the buyers’ email list?
A: Send a blank email to ski-trip-exchange-subscribe@mit.edu. Or go to this page to join the list or view the list archives.

Q: How do I notify the organizers that I have sold my ticket to another person?
A: Your buyer should complete the switch process online after you request a switch code. There is no need to notify the organizers.

Other
Q: I have other questions that are not answered in the FAQs.  Where should I send my questions?
A: Check out the Snowriders’ forum to read other common questions and/or submit your query. Make sure you have MIT certificates installed to access the page.
